December 2023

Happy Thanksgiving.  On behalf of the Bandon City Council and City employees, I would like to wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving.  It is the time of year we all gather with family and friends to enjoy their company, watch parades and football, and eat a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all of the fixings.  As we express gratitude for the blessings and good fortunes in our lives, let us also give thanks to those serving our country in the US Armed Forces across the globe, first responders and public officials/servants.  Lastly, Thanksgiving is also a time for giving and performing acts of kindness for the less fortunate and those in need throughout the greater Bandon community.

Prepare for Winter Storms.  The City would like to remind Bandon residents to make any necessary home repairs in advance of winter storms.  Also, seniors are encouraged to make any necessary medical appointments, obtain required medications and essentials to avoid having to do so during inclement weather.  Should any senior or disabled resident be in need of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact City Hall for help with facilitating the required support.  It is also a good idea to have an electric generator on hand in case there should be a prolonged power outage due to fallen trees or the like.  As members of the Bandon community, residents are asked to look out for their fellow neighbors who may be in need of assistance this winter.

Library Grant Award.  I am delighted to inform you all that the Bandon Public Library – Youth was recently awarded a grant in the amount of $3,000 by the John Henry Eldred Jr. Foundation.  The grant funding will be used for the development and implementation of library programing specifically tailored for Bandon youth.  Special thanks to the Foundation for supporting local municipal libraries and the amazing library staff for their work on obtaining the grant award.

Annual Tree Planting Event.  As a requirement to maintain its Tree City USA distinction, the City is required to host an annual tree planting event for the purpose of promoting tree preservation and the City’s urban forest.  With that said, the City Council and the City’s Park and Recreation Commission would like to thank those of you who volunteered your time on Saturday, November 18th, to plant 165 trees at City Park.  The tree planting event was made possible due to generous donations of tree samplings made by the local community.  The annual tree planting event is a component of the City’s tree reforestation program.  The City’s reforestation efforts provide for replacement of existing trees that are dead, dying, or diseased.  These efforts help to preserve the City’s urban forest, thereby protecting the quality of life and parklike environment for the Bandon community.  As we all know, trees produce oxygen, but they also improve air quality by removing carbon and particulate matter from the air we breathe.  Trees form windbreaks that shield Bandon from high coastal winds and help cool City Park on hot summer days through a process called transpiration.

Library Happenings.  I am happy to report that the Bandon Library has been awarded a Caselle grant and will soon be receiving $1,000 to support the development of a Teens Connect program.  The library recently participated in a competitive grant process that resulted in a monetary award to be used for programing activities that are appealing to teens in the community.  Library staff will be seeking input from local teens for the purpose of steering the development of program activities.  Specific programing for teens may include art projects, creative crafts, book clubs, writing groups, board games, video game “Mario Kart” tournaments, special guest presentations, escape rooms, Karaoke performances, theater workshops, and STEM activities.
